The Name/Der Name The Name/Der Name
by Jon Fosse
Kjøp billettThe upcoming director of Schauspiel Köln, Kay Voges, is directing this somewhat thriller-like version of The Name.
A young girl comes home to her family for the first time in a long time. She is heavily pregnant, and she brings with her also the future father of the child.
Things are mostly the same at home.
The girl's mother is sick, the girl's father gives her money, her sister is constantly looking for someone to play cards with – but no one in the family asks for the name of the girl's boyfriend, who is sitting in the corner reading books.
Nothing happens.
Almost nothing. Apparently nothing. Because it is so quiet.
The silence
Jon Fosse is the magician of silence. With The Name, he depicts a family reunion that seems startlingly insignificant, and lets the audience interpret it for themselves. Fosse creates music out of quietness, a rhythm of silence and short sentences. From wild and simple poetry arises an almost infinite space for thought, wonder and doubt, which director Kay Voges brings to the stage.
Through silence, an interpretive space arises where we become aware of our own lives. Each of us can experience crises and search for meaning – for what it actually means to live.
Communication in close relationships
In a time when communication has never been easier, regardless of distance, Jon Fosse's look at interpersonal communication makes you think. How does the conversation with the person right in front of us unfold under the media conditions of our time? Everyone talks to each other - but do they understand each other? The cosmos is getting smaller and smaller, but is everyone still alone? In the end, it´s about death. Finding hope in despair - that can be a way of looking forward.
