One question took center stage in my life, it focused all my thoughts and occupied every moment when I was alone with myself: how could I get this revenge, by what means? I tried everything.

Édouard Louis

In the novel Change, author Édouard Louis follows up on the themes in his first novel, The End of Eddy. He reflects on his life project of transforming himself—becoming someone else and distancing himself from his origins. Kjersti Horn has now adapted the novel for the stage, and Vetle Bergan will give voice to Louis´ words.

Louis describes his extreme class journey—from growing up among the poorest classes in a family marked by unemployment, alcoholism, violence, and oppression, through the middle class in a provincial town, to the intellectual circles of Paris and the French and international elite. Escaping one’s own fate requires an effort and willpower that few have demonstrated with the same determination as Louis. He is ruthless in exposing himself, his family, and his surroundings. A desire to take revenge on the past is a powerful driving force in his writing, but more than that, it is a project of liberation. Still, it comes at a cost.

Kjersti Horn and Édouard Louis

Kjersti Horn is directing this play, as she has with all the productions of Édouard Louis's works at the Norwegian Theatre. It began with the world premiere of the stage version of The End of Eddy, which was first performed at the nightclub Jaeger before moving to Stage 3 in 2016. Since then, she has brought History of Violence, Who Killed My Father?, and A Woman’s Battles and Transformations to the stage.
